DESCRIPTION:
INTRODUCTION Osteoporotic fractures represent an important cause of bed rest associated with high rehabilitation costs. The present study aims to report the habits of the Greek population regarding their skeletal health.
MATERIAL-METHOD The study included 11.268 individuals from all over Greece and lasted for 6 years (from 2004 until 2010). The bone density was measured by quantitative ultrasound and the partici-pants filled a 47-item questionnaire.
RESULTS The results of the present study indicate that only 39.4% of the study population had their bone density tested. Furthermore, the majority of the participants did not take prophylactic measures re-garding osteoporosis, as they only begin to consume milk in more advanced age. Additionally, it was found that only 2 individuals were receiving the ap-propriate amount of protein, while the 66.2% of the sample did not participate in any kind of physical activity. The results of the present study are in ac-cordance with other international studies. CONCLUSIONS The results of the present study showed that the habits of the majority of the Greek population fail to promote their skeletal health. Therefore, it is necessary to inform the public re-garding osteoporosis and engage them to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
