GROUP PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVENTION IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES MELLITUS-Clinical Applications

Siousioura D.P.

It has been broadly accepted that type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) causes extreme feelings of sadness, anxiety, ambivalence, and a sense of loss of health and well-being. Moreover, T1DM patients seem to lose the ability to maintain a sense of wholeness of the self, i.e. to maintain the “unified self “, within the reality of the disease. The present book presents and analyses a Model of Intervention that was used for a 2-year Conjunctive Group Therapy on adult Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, which combines principles and techniques from various psychotherapeutic approaches. The long-term target of this Model is to improve glycemic control; the process by which the Model achieves this target is the integration of the disease into the “unified self “, through the enhancement of knowledge over the condition and the modification of dysfunctional attitudes and behaviours that eventually promote patients’ control over their physical and psychological symptoms.
